Hi everyone

It is with great sadness that we have to report that one of our great South African photojournalists and documentary photographers have passed away this weekend aged 82.

Photo: Alf Kumalo (Greg Marinovich)

Alf Kumalo was from a young age intrigued by the impact of photos and their ability to freeze moments in time. This led him to a career in photography in which he taught himself how to shoot. His career as a journalist started in 1951 and he has since then photographed major events and the people that shaped South Africa.

His work has been published both locally and internationally. In September 2004, he was honoured by a solo exhibition at the 59th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He has also received many awards, including the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, at the National Orders awards on 19 October 2004, to honour his contribution to documentary photography and journalism in South Africa by the South African Government.

He ran a photography school in Diepkloof which, to this day, helps people from disadvantaged backgrounds to become photojournalists.

Kumalo is survived by his wife Elizabeth and two children. Our thoughts are with them in this difficult time.
