Hillcrest Camera Club - Information for "Wild Weekends" - Umfolozi and Nambiti 2018

Posted by Hillcrest Camera Club on Monday, August 21, 2017 Under: Outings

Hi everyone
Following from the very successful weekend away to Cape Vidal, there has been interest in organising more wildlife weekend's away. We are calling them the "Wild Weekends", mainly because of the wildlife photography, but also because of the fun and camaraderie to be had!
If you are interested in attending, and are happy with all the information given below,
please RSVP. From here we will work out who is attending, and make the appropriate bookings.
There are two options.
One is Elephant Rock Lodge, at Nambiti Nature Reserve. This is the "5 star" option, with private game drives, and exclusive accommodation. As there are only ten spaces available, we hope to 'book out' the venue. This will insure that all attending are photographers, and with the same experience in mind. No tourists or children getting fidgety on the game drives, ruining photo opportunities. This all comes at a price, and the rates are high. We have however secured a 20% discount, for a three day booking during the week, Sunday to Wednesday. You have the choice to stay either two or three days, with the third day being charged at half price.  We are wanting to do this in January 2018.
The 2nd option is Mpila Camp, Umfolozi. This is similar to Cape Vidal and Umlalazi, except there are cottages and chalets, not log cabins. We want to do this later in the year, I May 2018. The cost is similar to Cape Vidal, and we have secured a 15% discount. This will be a Friday to Sunday weekend stay. It will be self - catering, and there are braai facilities.  The aim for the weekend will be to drive around the game reserve (self-drive) and photograph the animals and scenery. There will also be hides to shoot at. At night there will be socialising and braaing at a communal area.
HCC aims to foster camaraderie and encourage the spirit of belonging to a group of like-minded people, who all have the same passion and interest. By attending the weekend’s away, you will be able to make friends and enhance your photographic experiences.
If you are interested in taking part,
please RSVP. Should there be agreement on the dates chosen, we will go ahead and book the venues. You will be required to make payment, probably directly to the venue or a booking agent.

Mpila Camp, Umfolozi, KZN

Possibly 25-27th May 2018

The aim of the weekend would be to photograph the wildlife and the surrounding areas. Meetups and socialising would be dependent on the weather, and there would probably be a gathering at a communal spot for a braai for supper, possibly Saturday evening.
Liz Cook has secured a 15% discount for HCC.
Accommodation Options:
2 x 7 bed Cottages

  •  The 7 bed cottages  have 3 bedrooms with 2, 2 and 3 single beds. 1 bathroom with toilet, and 1 toilet, 1 shower
  • The 7 bed cottages are adjacent, and we would get the services of the caretakers who could assist with meal preparation and cleaning up.
  • The lounge and verandas are large too, making a gathering easier.
  • It has a large fully equipped kitchen
6x 5 Bed Chalets (2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom)
  • R500 per person, per day.  Less 15% - R425
  • There is a minimum charge per unit, thereafter there is an extra charge per person. Minimum of 5 in the 7 bed cottage, and 4 in the 5 bed cottage. It is best to take advantage of lesser numbers per unit to allow for bathroom usage etc as the cost would be the same. If the numbers are to increase, we will rather secure another 5 bed cottage.
Example: If there are 7 people staying in the 7 bed Cottage during standard season the rate would be: R2500 (1-5 people) + R500 (6th person) + R500 (7th person) =  R3500 for 7 people. Less 15% = R 2975.00
