Hillcrest Camera Club - Meeting - Tues 07 May 2013

Hi everyone

1. Workshop: Painting with Light - ORBS

Join us for a fun evening of night shooting, where you will learn an interesting new technique for painting with light - orbs.
Night photography is a challenge, and this technique will provide an enjoyable way to learn. It will also give members a chance to practise ahead of attending the HCC Weekend Away, where will be shooting orbs and painting with light.

Ben Myburgh from Westville Camera Club will be showing us how to spin the lights, and how to shoot them.

We have made up custom LED lights, in different colours, with switches and long cords. They are R50.00. The switches are important because they allow you to turn off the light, and prevent light spill on your image. The lights come with batteries, but perhaps bring extra.

What to bring:

  • Camera
  • Tripod
  • Remote Shutter Release
  • Torch

2. Set Subject: Bokeh

This month's Set Subject is BOKEH and it is one of our more technical ones. Some of you might be familiar with the term, for those who are not it is the 'quality of the blur/out of focus areas' in your image - with a shallow depth of field (DOF) there will be parts of your image that are blurry and out of focus - from lights that appear as 'bubbles/hexagons' that give a magical feel to an image (fairy lights works great) to smooth silky backgrounds that help enhance your subject. For this challenge we will be looking at the background more than the focal point, we are looking at how you are able to control your aperture to create a beautiful example of BOKEH and use it to enhance your image.
For Compact digital camera users, try using your Macro settings in this challenge.
DSLR users, this will be about aperture control, so set your camera on Aperture Priority or Manual and use a larger aperture - f/1.8-f/5.6, try the largest your lens can cope with.
Focus (try manual focus) on the subject with the lights/background a little way away from your subject so that the subject is in focus and the background blurs and you are able to get an effect similar to what you see in the links below - you can get as creative as you would like with this - We hope you have the chance to have a bit of fun!
We have attached some links to some examples of beautiful BOKEH
