We have put together a provisional schedule, which we will try to follow, weather and logistics dependent. Please join in if you wish to take part in the group activities, however you are not obligated to. You can explore on your own, please see the website and contact info for doing your own research.
Once there, we will communicate by Whatsapp group, to announce changes. Please add Vanessa as a contact on your phone – 0760919825, and ask to be added to the group.

2. Information on the sights to see in Eshowe

DLINZA FOREST

Open from 6am – 5pm
Cost : R40.00 adult; R30.00 pensioner; R10.00 child
This gives you access to all the forest trails, aerial boardwalk and picnic sites.
Arrive whenever it suits you. It can be very cool up here as Eshowe is at the similar altitude as HC.  It can also get misty but it’s a beautiful forest.

•    Boardwalk – 125m walk. Starts from Visitor Centre.
•    Two walking forest trails which start at the picnic site - iMpunzi (1.3kms, 30mins), uNkonka(1.8kms, 45 mins).
•    Best time: Early mornings, particularly after rain, are broken by a chorus of forest birds and frogs
•    A picnic site on the western side of the forest provides secluded private barbecue sites and modern ablution facilities. Toilet paper is not provided.
•    An alternative to the forest trail is Royal Drive, a rough track which passes through the centre of the forest.

Boardwalk
Get a new perspective of life in the forest from the the 125-metre Aerial Boardwalk which leaves from the Visitor Centre and is soon in the leafy canopy high above the forest floor.
It is wheelchair friendly up to the final observation tower which is 20m high and offers superb views of the forest and the distant countryside.

HIKING TRAILS

The iMpunzi Trail (1,3kms) is an easy 30 minute round trip from the Visitor Centre and takes you past majestic Fluted Milkwoods, Giant Ironwoods and Wild Plum trees. Lookout for trees on the trails which are labelled and give a description of its uses in traditional medicine.

The uNkonka Trail (1,8kms) reaches deeper into the forest and is an easy 45 minute walk joining the iMpunzi Trail near its end. Along the way you will cross the source of the Mpushini river, where you may see antelope spoor or even encounter the Blue Duiker. Look out for blooming Clivia miniata flowers during Spring.

Bishop's Seat is a beautiful clearing in the forest where one of the early Bishops of Eshowe, Bishop W M Carter, would come to ponder his next sermon. It can be used as a venue for outdoor functions.

Royal Drive is a picturesque drive on a gravel road through the forest and was specially cleared for the British Royal Family's visit to Eshowe in 1947.

Zululand Historical Museum and Fort Nongqayi Museum Village

•    The Delightful coffee shop is still operational, but unfortunately not open on Saturdays.
•    The entrance fees for the Village is R35.00 per person
•    Norwegian Mission Chapel, Fort Nongqayi and Vukani Museum.

R66 (Route66)
•    The approaching road to Eshowe is scenic, and worth traveling.
•    For the R66, a website has been launched:    www.zululandroute66.co.za
•    On the P230 Road, off the R66 which passes through Eshowe, is the KwaBulawayo Cultural Centre which is partially operational already.   It is quite an impressive drive and this road leads off the P240 again which leads to the Ongoye Forest and passes Mtunzini.
