Meeting Tuesday 21 February 2012

Posted by Hillcrest Camera Club on Monday, February 20, 2012 Under: Meetings

Hi everyone

Our Photo Sharing evening is around the corner and you only have a few days to get everything ready for the meeting. This month the outing submissions will not be digital, but in print form. Read on for more details...

1. Photo Sharing

Our outing in January was a great success and we can't wait to see your photos. Your task was to photograph 8 subjects, print ONE jumbo sized photo for each subject, mount them on a board, title each photo and state the topic. There will be too many photos to view, so DO NOT submit digital photos for the Outing.

To recap the subjects:
1. From the Bus
2. Guilty Pleasure
3. Art Deco
4. Underneath
5. Posters and/or Graffiti
6. Sky
7. "Me" in the city
8. Market scene

Everyone will be able to vote for the best board and set of photos. Good Luck!!

So here is what you need to submit:
1. Open
2. Outing (People Mover Buses) - No digital submissions! - Prints on a board.
3. Set Subject (Abstract)
4. Troubleshooting

Please submit your photos by email to:
 hillcrestcameraclub@gmail.com , or bring 8x10 prints.
Email submission closes 8pm on Monday, 20 February, 2012.
You can submit photos for either/or Open and Set Subject categories. Please only submit 3 photos in total. You may submit only one extra photo in the Troubleshooting section.
Size - Maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels, and not more than 600KB per photo. Please do not exceed this limit!!!!
Format - Jpeg or Tiff
Labelling - the file name of each photo must follow this format: Category - Your Name & Surname - Title of Photo e.g. Open - Ryan McGinley - Falling Pink Sunset.

Please make the subject line of the email "February 2012 photo submissions". This will make it easier for Andre to identify the emails and ensure that your photos will be added.
Please note: If your photo is incorrectly labelled, or named, and there is no subject line for the email, or it is sent after the deadline it will not be shown.

If you miss the deadline for emailing, you can submit photos at the meeting on a memory stick. However, please be considerate and come early. Out of consideration to those who have submitted timeously, we will no longer be accepting submissions after 7PM, once the meeting begins.

2. Set Subject for February: Abstract

Just a thought - You may be able to get abstract shots at the Dusi!!!!

Wikipedia describes Abstract as follows: "Abstraction indicates a departure from reality in depiction of imagery in art."
Lee Frost describes it as: "...to separate or withdraw something from something else, though in art we tend to think of abstracts as having no reference to the real world."

When we photograph, we usually want to capture the reality of what we see. We photograph a person, a landscape, a building, etc. and when others look at it they will also recognise it. When we want to create a photo that is an abstract, we have to steer clear of reality or take a step back from it.

Remove the reality, familiarity, identity and even colour from what you are photographing and you are left with line, pattern, texture and form that can be used to create amazing photographs. Zoom in to your subject to capture the detail and experiment as much as possible. Abstracts are everywhere you around us...

3. Foto First Facebook printing special

Foto First is having a special until the end of February on 8"x12" prints for R9 per print. All you have to do is quote "Facebook 9" when you order your prints to be eligible for the special price. This came along at just the right time for everyone to get their prints done for the exhibition.

4. Camera Club Exhibition - DATE CONFIRMED

The date for the exhibition has been confirmed. It will be on Saturday, the 3rd of March and more details regarding the venue will be given later. Please get your mounted photos ready this weekend and hand them in at the meeting. All members are welcome to exhibit their work and we encourage everyone to bring at least one mounted print to the Tuesday meeting.

We still need a LED TV to display the digital images on. If anyone is willing to lend us theirs for the exhibition, please email us at hillcrestcameraclub@gmail.com. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Printed photos must be A4 or larger and they must be mounted. For those that need to have mounts made, contact Harry Lock on 082 576 0199. He will need some time to make the mounts, so please contact him as soon as possible. Mike Volckman will put together a slideshow for members that want to display their digital images, but please remember that we prefer prints. More details will be given for the digital submissions.

And remember, seeing your photos printed and mounted is extremely rewarding, so don't delay and submit them!!

See you at 7PM, Tuesday 21 February 2012!
