Notice for Club Meeting Tuesday 8 November 2011

Posted by Hillcrest Camera Club on Sunday, November 6, 2011 Under: Meetings

Hi everyone

It was very unfortunate that our Tuesday meeting had to be cancelled due to the Hillcrest power outage. We are happy to report that the power is back on, and we are having our meeting this coming Tuesday. Harry is away and will not be able to give his talk, but our chairman, Gordon Battersby, and a few other members have agreed to stand in. We hope to see everyone at the meeting.

1. Speaker - Gordon Battersby - Depth of Field and Gordon's trip to Rwanda

Depth of Field
Depth of field (dof) is an integral part of photography that can be creatively used to either isolate your subject by blurring the foreground and the background or it can be used to have everything in a landscape in focus for maximum detail.

Gordon will explain the concept and technique behind the use of dof, so come along and take your creativity a step further.

Gordon has recently completed an amazing trip through Southern Africa and he will tell us all about his experiences in Rwanda. Who knows, after seeing his photos, you may just book your own trip.

2. Speakers - Vanessa Cracknell and Anton Botha - Photographic Projects

It is the end of the year and everybody is winding down for the holidays. Now is the perfect time to embark on a Photographic Project. Vanessa will briefly explain what it is and how to go about it so that you can begin your own project. Both Vanessa and Anton will give examples of projects they have been working on.

3. Set Subject: Pattern

Wikipedia explains 'Pattern' as follows:

"A pattern, from the French patron, is a type of theme of recurring events or objects, sometimes referred to as elements of a set of objects. These elements repeat in a predictable manner."

You can find patterns everywhere around you. Just look at the windows of a tall building, the strands in material, ripples on a sand dune, trees in a plantation, etc. Start thinking about patterns and you will be amazed at what you will find.

Lighting is everything in photography and even more so for this set subject. Use shadows to show depth and to exaggerate forms. Do this in the early morning or late afternoon when shooting outdoors.

Time to think out of the box. Or, if the box makes a nice pattern, take a photograph!

4. Outing: Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve

Our outing will be to the beautiful Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve.

The reserve boasts 56 mammal species. These include zebra, blue wildebeest, bushbuck, blesbok, oribi, reedbuck, blue and grey duiker, black-backed jackal, vervet monkeys, rock hyrax, tree hyrax, caracal, slender mongoose, white tailed mongoose, egyptian mongoose, banded mongoose and porcupine.

The abundant birdlife (some 300 confirmed species) includes a number of spectacular raptors like the Crowned and Martial eagle which nest in the reserve, while an interesting variety of indigenous flora adds to the reserve's attractions, not least in spring when the veld is alive with colour.
