Notice for Club Meeting - Tuesday 07 June 2011

1. Speaker -Jaco Tredoux - 360 Degree Panorama

Jaco Tredoux of RC Helicam. Aerial Photography and Video.
Jaco will speak to us about their awesome aerial photography, which allows them to shoot 360 degree panorama shots, as well as aerial HD video, using a remote control radio helicopter. From aerial panoramas of property shots for estate agents, to videos of guys doing extreme sports like white water rafting, this takes action photography to a new height. It also gives us insight into a variation of our own photography, and the different applications for our equipment.

Not to be missed!

See www.rchelicam.co.za for more info.

2. Set Subjects: Black and White Still Life
(to be shown at 2nd meeting, 22 June 2011)

Our set subject for June is 'Black and White Still Life'.

Wikipedia Definition: "
Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life  photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition.

Still life photography is a demanding art, one in which the photographers are expected to be able to form their work with a refined sense of lighting, coupled with compositional skills. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them. "

It is about visual impact, mood, composition and lighting. Take inanimate objects and arrange them into a composition that tells a story. Or photograph a single object and pay attention to its detail. Try to make the viewer's eye linger.

Lighting is extremely important as it will be the first consideration when creating the mood of the photo. Sunlight or diffused light usually works best, but you may want to use direct light with harsh shadows to create a different mood. The second consideration is the tones used in the photo, which will also enhance the mood.

For this assignment you are not allowed to submit colour photos, but you can use other tones than black and white, such as sepia and cyanotype. Push the boundaries of your creativity. Create something that portrays your personality or use a theme. In this case your picture can tell a thousand words.

We have a fantastic book that is being raffled at the meetings. It is called "Photo-wisdom. The raffle tickets are only R10 each and this will be your last chance to buy them. The draw will take place at the end of the meeting. Good luck!!

See you at 7PM, Tuesday 07 June!

Photo Project:

Shape Up: Pick one of the following shapes: square, rectangle, circle, diamond or triangle, and head out in search of your chosen form. Try the sweep of a spiral staircase (circle), the opening of a letterbox (rectangle) or the legs of a trestle table (triangle).

Applaud Yourself: Hands reveal a lot about a person, including age, gender, marital status and, occasionally, occupation. Take a series of portraits showing hands clapping, praying, playing an instrument etc. Now repeat the exercise with feet - try dancing, running, etc.
