Notice for Outing - Sunday 29 July 2012

Posted by Hillcrest Camera Club on Saturday, July 28, 2012 Under: Outings

Hi everyone

1. Outing: Rocky Bay and Scottburgh Classic Car Show

Rocky Bay

We are going to Rocky Bay on Sunday and it promises to be a spectacular day. There should be some cloud cover for a spectacular sunrise and it will be low tide so we can use the rocks as foreground interest. The conditions can't get any better than this!!

What Rocky Bay has to offer:

  • The low tide will expose all of the rocks and rock pools in front and to the right of the parking area. They can be used as foreground interest and also to reflect the sunrise.
  • To the left is a pier that overlooks the sea where fishermen stand and fish. You can create beautiful silhouettes with the rising sun as backlight.
  • The boats also launch next to the pier. You can capture movement and the interactions between people.
  • Further left is the river mouth that creates a beautiful lagoon. You can get great reflections in the still water.
  • The train bridge has beautiful arches and is built over the lagoon. You can even go onto the bridge to photograph the trains going over. Just exercise caution when you are next to the tracks.

What to bring:

  • Tripod, fully charged batteries and empty memory cards.
  • It will be dark so remember to bring a torch.
  • A cloth to clean the sea spray from your lens. Clean it regularly!!
  • A plastic bag to cover your camera if it starts to rain.
  • It looks like it will be a cold morning so warm clothes are a must.
  • Coffee and rusks will keep the morning chill at bay!

We will get some breakfast in Scottburgh after the shoot.

Date: Sunday, 29th of July
Time: 5:30am to 6am (Come early to catch the early morning glow)
Place: Meet on the right hand side of the parking. Will make it easier to find each other in the dark.
Directions: Get onto the N2 South towards Port Shepstone. Take Exit 104 - R612 Umzinto North/Park Rynie. At the Stop sign turn left onto the R612 and drive towards the sea. At the robots turn right on to the R102 Pennington and drive for 1.8km. Follow the signs to the Rocky Bay Beach Front. The distance from Hillcrest is about 88km and it will take about 1 hour to get there.

Scottburgh Classic Car Show

We will head out to the car show after breakfast. You will be able to get some great photos of the classic, pre 1975, cars that will be on display.

The featured marque will be for Triumph vehicles. There will also be a special parade to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Triumph Spitfire.

All show cars will be given the opportunity to drive around the field perimeter so you can get some great movement shots. If you want to avoid getting people in your shots, then try and use a polarising filter to cut out reflections and to saturate colours. Also zoom in and focus on details.

There will also be food stalls, a beer tent and a tea garden if breakfast just wasn't enough.

Venue: The Country Club, Airth Street, Scottburgh
Time: 9am to 3pm
Entry Fees: Visitors R30, Pensioners and Scholars R10, Children under 12 free
