October Meeting - Tuesday, 5th October 2010 at 7pm

Hi All

1. Speaker

On Tuesday, we have a very interesting speaker lined up, Rogan Ward.

Rogan is a freelance photographer based in Durban. While his work covers all genres of photography, his passion is social documentary photography. Doing this work he often finds himself in challenging, if not interesting situations and places. On Tuesday he will be sharing some of his experiences and explain how he approaches and interacts with the people he photographs. Rogan's photographs are regularly published by the Mail & Guardian, The Sunday Times and distributed by Reuters.

You can also read his blog at http://roganward.blogspot.com/. Here are some of his photos from the blog.

This picture is from the recent health-workers' strike.

2. Outing - 16 October 2010

We'll be going out to the New Germany Nature Reserve for the October outing. It's a little gem in the hustle and bustle of the Pinetown area where you can capture the nature's beauty through your lens.

The following was taken from their website:
"On the hills overlooking New Germany and Pinetown lies the tiny New Germany Nature Reserve. Although it is only 110 ha in extent it still has a lot to offer the visitor.

The undulating trails lead you through the grassland with occasional clumps of forest. The reserve is a host to a few species of mammals such as impala, zebra, vervet monkeys and duiker. It also has a substantial variety of bird species. In spring it is a popular place to see wild flowers in bloom.

Another attraction at the reserve is the large walk-in aviary featuring a wide variety of indigenous bird species. There is also a small interpretation centre at the entrance. The reserve is administered by the New Germany Parks Department.

Directions: Turn left into Otto Volek Road from Old Main Road in Pinetown. After approximately 1 km you turn right at the signpost. Follow the road up the hill to the reserve.
Telephone: 031-7054360. Entrance is free."

The time for the outing will be confirmed via e-mail closer to the day, so keep an eye on your emails.

3. Second Monthly Meeting - Tuesday, 19 October 2010

The second meeting is our "Show and Tell" evening, where everyone can submit their photos to share, and to be commented on.

There are three categories to submit photos for:
  1. Set Subject - Traffic
  2. Outing (October outing - New Germany Nature Reserve)
  3. Open
You can bring three photos. It's best to bring one photo per subject, but you are allowed to bring more than one per subject. Please don't bring more than three in total.

* New Photo Submission Method - Email *

Due to the high number of digital submissions at the previous meeting, we've decided that all digital submissions have to be emailed before the meeting. This will give Andre the chance to download and sort them into categories before the meeting.

1. Photos can be emailed to hillcrestcameraclub@gmail.com
2. Deadline is 8PM on the Sunday before the Tuesday meeting. (ie. 8 PM on 17 October 2010)
3. Size - Maximum of 1024 x 768 pixels, and not more than 600KB per photo.
4. Format - Jpeg or Tiff
5. Labeling - each photo must be labeled correctly.  ie - Category - Your Name & Surname - Title of Photo
eg. Set Subject - Vanessa Cracknell - Street Traffic in Durban.
6. Please make the subject line of the email "October photo submissions for 2nd meeting". This will make it easier for Andre to identify the emails and ensure that your photos will be added.
Please note: If your photo is incorrectly labeled, or there is no subject line for the email, or it is sent after the deadline it will not be shown.

If you miss the deadline for emailing, you can submit photos at the meeting. However, please be considerate and come early. From October, out of consideration to those who have submitted timeously, we will no longer be accepting submissions after 7PM, once the meeting begins.

You can also submit prints -  size 8"x10" or larger at the meeting.

4.  Set Subject for October

"Traffic" - The movie : A conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is an addict.

Photo inspiration - Stretch your imagination beyond the typical shots of car trails, and traffic. Think of a different way to depict 'traffic' - ants parading through your kitchen, birds flying home at sunset, children playing in the garden. Patterns, movement and shapes. Go beyond the ordinary.

5. Hillcrest Camera Club Christmas Party

You are all invited to attend the club Christmas party. Please feel free to invite your family and friends. Please make payment as soon as possible, as the payment deadline is the beginning of November.

6. Year End Club Photo Exhibition
